Antão's lengthy review looks at Goan stories in Portuguese written in past decades, and recently translated by Dr Paul Melo e Castro. This Goan literature in Portuguese has been translated into English by Paul Melo e Castro (b.1978), a young academic of Portuguese origin, teaching literature at the University of Leeds (UK) – now at Glasgow, focussing on the Portuguese-speaking world. Some 45 stories and 14 authors are featured in this col-lection. These writings first appeared in the Goan Portuguese press.
Castro says, “Stories only live when someone is reading or hearing them (though, like some amazing animals, they have the ability to lie dead for years and then resuscitate as if by magic), so it’s great to know these ones have been restored to existence.”
In his introduction, the translator supplies bio details of the authors and comments on their stories, which help the reader. Antão comments about the book: “Personally,Introduction I found these stories revelatory and insightful of the colonial times.”
